A common back condition that can cause pain and suffering is spinal stenosis. This article will give a brief description of the causes and available treatments. Spinal stenosis is the narrowing of the spine. This can occur either in the upper of lower spinal or in both areas. This condition is the result of spinal degeneration that usually comes with age. The narrowing of the spine puts pressure on the nerves that branch out from the spinal column.

As these nerves are compressed the person may feel pain and numbness in the lower or upper back. This pain may radiate down the leg causing severe discomfort. Interestingly many people may have spinal stenosis and not experience any of the symptoms. These symptoms may occur when undue stress is place on the spine due to an injury or if the deterioration increases. The deterioration is also associated with osteoarthritis which is a main cause of the stenosis.

Treatment: In most cases the doctor will begin with conservative measures to relieve the pain. This may include physical therapy, anti inflammatory drugs and/or a brace. Strengthening the back muscles and correcting muscle imbalance is a prime objective of the various treatments. Strong back and abdominal muscles give support to the spine relieving the pressure on the nerves.

For severe cases surgery may be necessary. Although only a very small minority of patients require an operation. In most cases non-invasive treatments will be all that is necessary.

One of the top rated programs is called the Lose The Back Pain System developed by therapists and doctors of the Healthy back Institute. This program has helped thousands by strengthening muscles and eliminating muscles imbalance. As someone who has suffered with a bad back and who has endured months of physical therapy and an operation, I can tell you there are solutions for your discomfort.

An orthopedics surgeon (also known as an orthopedist) is a physician who specializes in the skeletal structure of the body. As a bone and joints expert, an orthopedist can meet with patients at all levels of care. Your orthopedist can accurately diagnose and effectively treat most types of low back pain in the office. An orthopedic surgeon can find the cause of back pain and come up with a treatment plan to lesson or cure this pain. Using both surgical and non-surgical means, the orthopedic surgeon will treat injuries and degenerative problems of the spine. The orthopedist will examine you and study x-rays of your spine. In addition, your orthopedist will want to discuss your complete medical history and a description of the symptoms related to your orthopedic difficulties. A good orthopedist will give you a proper diagnosis and ensure that you receive comprehensive treatment to manage the pain. Based on his/her exam and any test results, the orthopedist will recommend a course of action.

The orthopedist can order physical therapy to decrease pain and offer protective and corrective devices, such as back braces, to aid healing in joints and bones. An orthopedist can prescribe drugs, such as steroids, muscle relaxants, anti-inflammatory medications as well as pain killers. He/she can also order tests to determine if a patient is a surgical candidate. However, a good orthopedist will only use surgery as a last resort. The orthopedist will be able to tell you any physical exercises or other forms of treatment that may be required.

Chances are very good that your orthopedist can help you restore your quality of life and live as pain-free as possible. If you follow the directions of the orthopedic surgeon, you should be able to live a fairly normal pain-free life.

A Visit to the Chiropractic Clinic

Posted by admin in Prescription Pain Killers on August 06th, 2009

If you are considering visiting a chiropractic clinic, it would be a good idea to learn a little bit about the practice of chiropractic. Chiropractic is a discipline of medicine that is non invasive, and does not involve the use of surgery or drugs. The most common treatment involves the physical manipulation of your body, usually focusing on the back and neck. This is referred to as a spinal adjustment. The basic premise behind these adjustments is the belief that the spine and general health are fundamentally related. By avoiding medication and surgery, doctors of chiropractic minimize risk to patients.

The origination of chiropractic is credited to D. D. Palmer in the late 19th century. There are now more than 55,000 chiropractors in the United States. Not all chiropractic clinics are created equal. When you are selecting a chiropractic clinic it is a good idea to call beforehand to make sure the philosophy and specialization of the chiropractor is in line with your needs as a patient. Many chiropractic clinics have specialties in the same way that traditional doctors have. Specialties can include sports injuries, chronic pain, accident rehabilitation, and many others.

The practice of chiropractic shares many qualities with other physical manipulation therapies including massage therapy and physical therapy. There are similarities between these professions, but the main difference is the intense focus that chiropractic has on the spine. Chiropractic practitioners are also more concerned with the nervous system than the other therapy providers.

Your first visit to a chiropractic clinic will almost always be a consultation. This is so the doctor can make an informed decision on how to proceed with your treatment. This consultation usually consists of a medical history, a description of all symptoms (even the ones that you may not believe are related to back or neck pain), and usually an x-ray. After this initial consultation you are on your way to your first adjustment.

Dr. Robert V. Duvall, Jesse Cannone and Steve Heffernon of The Healthy Back Institute have been working diligently for 10 years to understand the root causes of back pain. They found that, often times, the problem was that patients were referred to treatments aimed at helping the symptoms, rather than the cause.

It’s like taking an aspirin for a headache: it will help mitigate the discomfort for the time being, but will not prevent future headaches from returning. “Back pain does not happen overnight,” they argue. “The reason you have it is because your body and spine have been pulled out of their normal position and into what we call dysfunctions. If you are like most people, you move around and live your life without ever being aware that you are forcing your body to work with these dysfunctions, and sooner or later your body breaks down.” With The Lose The Back Pain System, they hope to educate sufferers of this discomfort to find real cures.

For the $97 price tag, you’ll receive 2 Lose the Back Pain DVDs, 3 Lose the Back Pain Audio CDs, a 117-page Lose the Back Pain Reference Manual, a personal Lose the Back Pain Workbook, unlimited customer support and the Lessons from Miracle Doctors Ebook. The Lose The Back Pain System was written by three medical specialists: Jesse Cannone, a Fitness Expert and Post Rehab Specialist; Steve Hefferon, a Sports Massage Therapist; and Dr. Robert V. Duvall, a Doctor of Physical Therapy, a Master of Physical Therapy, a certified Athletic Trainer and Master Golf Fitness Instructor.

Their system will help you identify the cause, treat the symptoms and furthermore, treat the cause and condition. This system goes beyond the generic stretching instructions offered by doctors. The program consists of self-identifying tests to help you determine the root of your problem and a personalized self-treatment plan.

The best thing about The Lose The Back Pain System is that you can start off with a free guide to see if the program is for you. All things considered, paying $97 for straight-forward scientific information and personalized treatment solutions for this discomfort, with round-the-clock support, is not a bad deal. Most of the sufferers in the testimonials mention chronic back pain that has spanned decades, excruciating sciatica, herniated discs and disabling pain; so this system is a good place to start if you’ve been feeling dissatisfied with your doctors’ rushed explanations and recommendations.

If you’d like to investigate some of the self-help products available for this discomfort, this system can also help you identify which types would work best for your specific condition. And if you don’t know what your root cause or condition is, then the self-help tests can assist you in ascertaining this as well.

The down side of The Lose The Back Pain System is that it sounds too good to be true. Is this just another over-hyped series of books and DVDs mass-marketed to an eager audience (like “The Secret” or the Atkins Diet)? If you have seemingly tried everything and are at your wit’s end, then you might appreciate the customer service offered by their support staff and the ability to gather new information.

Yet much of this information seems to be lacking proven scientific evidence, some reviewers caution, and many of the testimonials seem to be written by sales copywriting professionals. Exercise caution before resting all your hopes on this system, and you’d be well-served to try out the free guide before you buy the full deal.

As you may be aware, both spinal decompression and physical therapy can be used to treat pain that originates in the neck and spine.? That said, it is important to realize that physical therapy is designed to rehabilitate your muscles.? In most cases, if a bone is out of place, or pinching a nerve, this therapy will not move it back into alignment. On the other hand, computer guided spinal traction can easily manipulate the discs in your spine and neck in order to relieve nerve damage.

Typically, when you first have an accident that causes neck or back pain, you will be sent for physical therapy.?

Unfortunately, if a disc is even slightly out of alignment, the added stress from this therapy can make things much worse. Perhaps it should come as no surprise that people often experience a significant increase in pain after going for physical therapy.? Regardless of whether you have a minor injury, or a more severe one, you should do everything possible to make sure that your spinal column is in proper alignment.

If you do not know where to begin with treatment, you should at least ask your doctor to send you for chiropractic treatment. Ideally, you should look to have any bone issues addressed before you try to use therapy to adjust the condition of your muscles. Without a question, if you can gain access to spinal decompression, you should see if you can have this type of therapy first, ahead of all the others.

Experiencing a profound compassion for another in dreadful pain is a normal reaction. However, knowing that the individual suffering from a curable adversity, such as sciatica, may prove your sympathetic posturing as being nothing more than unwarranted.

A physician may either suggest exercise, physical therapy or even surgery to alleviate the sciatica discomfort, but all too often these methods will not serve any benefit, whatsoever. As well, an expensive surgery can cause extensive and irreparable damage, leaving the patient with an unsightly scar and without any guarantee of success. So quite understandably, a natural, organic alternative is the only viable solution.

The individual impaired by sciatica should realize that the pain is a results of irritation, inflammation or compression stemming from the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve, which is the longest nerve in the human body, originates in the back of the pelvis and travels through the superficial gluteus maximus muscle and subsequently proceeds downward through the biceps femoris, calf muscles and ends in the toes.

The intensity of sciatica pain can vary from mild to extremely agonizing, and any number of factors can be responsible for the debilitating disorder. In a variety of instances, there is not an obvious cause for the pain, at all. However, one must be mindful that a simple annoyance may very well escalate into a harrowing experience resulting in a tingling sensation, numbness and a torturesome ache. Although many health care experts attribute the problem to any combination of bone, joint or muscle strains, a herniated disc may also be the cause of the treatable annoyance. Nonetheless, anything that may either agitate or compress the nerve to the point of immobility renders the sufferer incapable of even attempting just a few steps at any one time.

For many, a trip to the doctor’s office just is not an option anymore. While the cost of health care skyrockets into the ionosphere, and with nearly sixty million Americans barely functioning through life without a health insurance plan, the only feasible alternative to a host of health concerns is, indeed, for a health conscious individual to revert back to nature.

After evolving on this planet for billions of years, nature has proven itself as being a faster healer, a less expensive option, and a smart choice that is much more safer.

Nature has always been here to help. Take advantage of what it has to offer. Accept no substitutes.

Back Surgery and Rehab

Posted by admin in Prescription Pain Killers on July 06th, 2009

If anyone had told me how long and painful my back surgery and rehab would be I might have put off the operation and tries other non surgical treatments. As it was I had injured myself at work resulting in a herniated disc and sciatic pain. Now I did try a couple of standard conservative treatments including rest, Tylenol, ice packs and physical therapy. Although all of these gave me some help the results were temporary. The pain always came back. Probably because I was still working. For six months my life consisted of go to work come home, eat supper and lay down until it was time to go to bed.

Finally the doctor sent me to have an MRI. The MRI showed a herniated disc in my lower back. I was told both by my doctor and the surgeon that I was a perfect candidate for surgery. The type they recommended was an “MILD” or minimum invasive lumbar decompression.? This would be done as an outpatient procedure. I would be home in a couple of hours and my pain would be gone. My doctor even said I wouldn’t need physical therapy. I thought great let’s do it!? I’m tired of the pain and wanted my life back ASAP!

Well the surgery was everything the doctor said it would be I went to the clinic at seven in the morning and by 10:30 I was home resting in bed without any pain!? This is great! I thought. The surgeon did set me up for four weeks of physical therapy and in truth it made sense. My back muscles had weaken and I had muscle imbalance due to the months of inactivity.

However 2 weeks after the operation I started experiencing severe pain in my lower back and leg. I went back on Oxycotin and had to cut ack on my PT. The surgeon said it was due to swelling and that eventually it would settle down. That was six weeks ago. I’m still on Oxy and going to physical therapy. Although I’m still spend most of my time on my back and am out of work, I am improving.

Now I don’t blame my surgeon. He has an excellent reputation. However there are many risks involved with any surgery and swelling and pain is one of them. I wished I had explored more alternatives to surgery. But it all sounded so good and I was in pain. If you are suffering from an aching back I encourage you to seek alternative treatments. Although only a small percent of back pain sufferers require surgery anyone with a bad back can benefit from non-invasive treatments.

Herniated disc - just the name brings shivers down my spine! More serious than a muscle strain it is one of the more common causes of back complaints. What is a herniated disc? How can it be treated? How can it be prevented? Discs are the cushion of material between your spinal. You have twenty three of these discs. Each one acts as a cushion between the vertebrae. Disc consists of a tough outer membrane and a soft inner layer. When too much pressure is placed on the discs some of the material can leak or bulge out and press against a nerve root. This is commonly called a pinched nerve. It’s this pinched nerve that causes the pain and discomfort.

Treatment: Although it sounds serious, many times the best treatment is rest, icing with an ice pack and taking a medicine like Tylenol. The good news is that only about 2% of people with this condition require surgery.

Prevention: Most back problems can be eliminated by using proper lifting techniques. Lift with your legs not your back and don’t lift more than you can comfortably handle.?Degeneration of your discs is something that happens as we age. However by strengthening core muscles and preventing muscle imbalance most back injuries can be prevented.
