Types of Back Pain and Mattresses That Can Help
Posted by admin in Prescription Pain Killers on January 31st, 2010
In regards to your health, the most important piece of furniture you own is your mattress. You spend approximately one third of your life in bed. An uncomfortable mattress can have a negative effect on the quantity and quality of your sleep. This is especially the case for millions of back pain sufferers who have been ill advised over the last several decades that a firm mattress is best for them. In actuality there are several factors to consider when choosing the best mattress for you, including: the type of back problem you are experiencing, your sleep position, mattress support, and your comfort preference.
Different types of mattresses help alleviate pain for different types of back problems and symptoms. People with lumbar disc problems have symptoms that include a shooting pain in one leg from the top of the buttock to the lower leg or foot accompanied by numbness, the feeling of “pins and needles”, or leg weakening. Those suffering from this condition would benefit from a firm mattress as a bending or flexing mattress can be very uncomfortable.
Sufferers of spinal stenosis experience pain, cramping or numbness in the back, legs, arms, and shoulders and function better in a flexed or loose position. Therefore, a slightly softer mattress works better for them. The most common back pain complaint is lower back pain. Usually people experience an aching dull pain in the center of the lower back. A clinical study out of Spain showed that a medium firm mattress is generally better at relieving chronic back pain than a firmer model. However, there isn’t one single style of mattress that works best for everyone with lower back pain.
In conjunction with the type of back pain you suffer from, another factor to consider is the position in which you sleep. If you have a lumbar disc problem then sleeping on your stomach with a flat pillow under your stomach and hips is probably the most comfortable position for you because it reduces stress on the degenerated disc in your lower back. A firmer mattress is best for sleeping on your stomach while a softer mattress will cause an uncomfortable arch in your back that will worsen your condition.
People with spinal stenosis are most comfortable sleeping on their side in the fetal position with a pillow between their knees. A medium firm or firm mattress is good for this sleeping position but most people prefer a thicker padding to reduce pressure on their hips and shoulders. Finally, those suffering from lower back pain should sleep lying on their back with a pillow under their knees to relieve pressure from the lower back. There is no single mattress style that works for all people with back pain, but people with lower back pain should choose a mattress that offers support, comfort, and ultimately, a good night’s sleep.
Another major factor in choosing a mattress is the support that mattress provides. A supportive mattress will offer the right balance of support and concavity in order to allow the spine to align naturally. There are several components of the mattress that contribute to how supportive a mattress set is. First, mattress springs and coils are the most important features of a mattress that provide back support. The coil gauge of mattress denotes how stiff or firm a mattress is. The lower the gauge of the coil, the thicker and stiffer the wire, thus, the firmer the mattress. Furthermore, the higher the coil count of a mattress, the better the quality. However, a higher coil count does not necessarily mean a more comfortable or supportive mattress.
The next component of a mattress set that affects back support is the foundation, or boxspring. The foundation/boxspring absorbs weight for the mattress. It is important to purchase the boxspring designed to match your mattress because manufacturers design both pieces to work together. A mismatched set may adversely affect the longevity of your mattress and the level of support the mattress provides.
Finally, the most important key to mattress buying is to buy what is comfortable for you. No two of us are the same when it comes to what we need from our mattress. Therefore, it is important to take time to actually try the mattress out, especially if you suffer from chronic back problems. It is suggested that you spend at least ten minutes on several different mattresses. Turn over from side to side and make sure that mattress provides enough support to allow the spine to rest in its natural state. The mattress quilt and just beneath the quilt, in the middle of mattress, consist of mattress padding made of polyurethane foams, puffed up polyester, and cotton batting. These materials affect the firmness of the mattress. Generally, people find that mattresses with more padding are more comfortable.
Overall, when choosing a mattress, consider all of the factors mentioned above. Ultimately, the best mattress for your back pain is the one you find most comfortable for you and your sleep preferences.

Chiropractic is a discipline in health and wellness which promotes proper functioning of the nervous system. It basically concentrates on the spine as it is through it that our nervous system functions. Though chiropractic tends to focus on the spinal cord, its importance is not limited to back-related disorders. It seeks revive the body’s vigor by means of the hands adjusting abnormalities in the musculoskeletal system. Chiropractic experts believe that ailments affect the human body through the nervous system. Chiropractic does not utilize drugs and chemicals therefore, it is safe, natural and most of all, painless.
Chiropractic’s basic therapy is through manipulation of the spinal cord along the muscles that surround it. Chiropractors, a term used for chiropractic practitioners, are doctors themselves. Before they manipulate the spine, several tests and processes are conducted on the patients. Patients undergo consultations, physical examination, laboratory and x-ray procedures. According to principles that govern the practice of chiropractic, patients feel better when their spines are manipulated to an ideal form. They say that improvement in the spine’s form eliminates bad health conditions therefore improving the person’s quality of life. As mentioned, chiropractors do not only focus on the back part of the body. They also take part in determining the health needs of their patients such as food intake and exercise for overall vigor and revitalization of the body and the mind. They encourage their patients to practice healthy lifestyle along with care to the nervous system.
Many people believe that chiropractic is not needed to improve the quality of life. People tend to even ignore chiropractic when they do not feel backaches or when backaches are bearable. They do not realize the incredible health benefits this medical discipline offers.
Since chiropractic involves spine manipulation, it improves posture not only for aesthetic purposes but also to make the nervous system achieve its optimal function. When problems in the nervous system are addressed, the person’s mobility and muscle coordination greatly improve as well. Chiropractic - What to Expect on Your First Chiropractic Office Visit
Posted by admin in Prescription Pain Killers on January 31st, 2010
When you go in for your consultation, you will have to give out your medical history. This will involve filling out a form and letting them know all of your medical background information. This will help them to find any issues that you might have, leaving little room for doubt.
These are a few questions that you might be asked on the form:
- What day did you first start feeling pain?
- How did all this start?
- Do you know how it could have happened?
- Is there anything you can do to make it better or worse?
This information will help the doctor in assessing your condition. They will use your answers in comparison to the information that they have on file, and they will be able to use it to determine what is really wrong.
The Exam
A physical examination is required for all patients prior to going through the treatment. These tests can include reflexes, pulse, respiration, among other things. Once these tests are completed, the necessary information will bet here for a real and proper diagnosis of the patient.
Some of the things that are tested in the initial exam are strength and muscle tone, range of motion, and of course the patient will be tested for possible neurological imbalances. Sometimes physical activity will be required as this is necessary to see exactly how well the body is working at this point.
The Diagnosis
When all of the proper information is collected it will be necessary for a diagnosis to be made. There will be x-rays, an MRI, and many other procedures. All of these will work toward diagnosing and treating you properly. Once the doctor has compiled all of this information, they are ready. Now they need to figure out whether or not to proceed with the chiropractic treatment, or whether you need some other type of treatment, which is entirely possible.
How long will I be there?
More than likely you won’t be there for more than an hour. Believe it or not this will actually be adequate time to check your condition and read over the collected information. It shouldn’t be a rushed process, but it shouldn’t take all day. Just make sure you are treated properly and all of the information is acquired from you.
Determining Treatment
It’s possible that the treatment will begin immediately. It really depends on how bad your condition actually is. If you have a less severe condition however, then you will probably begin your treatment at the next session. Your chiropractor will take a look at your diagnosis and results and see exactly what needs to be done. Basically a set of goals will be made regarding the treatment which will be based on the extent of the damage and it will also be determined whether you need long term or short term treatment.
While you undergo these treatments you will find that your life improves significantly, and you will find that it stays that way for a very long time so long as you’re on the right treatment plan. This is what you can expect on your first Fort Collins chiropractic office visit.
Cushion For a Car Seat - Sciatica Beware
Posted by admin in Prescription Pain Killers on January 30th, 2010
Dealing with sciatica is hard, driving with sciatica, well that’s just darn near impossible. Short trips aren’t always the problem, it’s those long road trips that really get you - like vacations, holidays, you name it.
The thing with driving when you have sciatica is mainly that sitting position that you are forced to stay in. Not only does that put pressure on your lower back, but when you start lifting one leg up and down for the gas and brake it is enough to make you ponder ditching the trip all together.
So how do we combat this? How do you find relief when you are dealing with those nasty car rides? Here are some of my favorite driving remedies for sciatica.
Cushion for Car Seat - Sciatica busters while driving.
1 - Some people recommend getting a coccyx pillow for your bum. The benefit here is that it should support your lower back. But I have never used one personally and honestly, I am not sure that I would be able to handle one while driving. Obviously the other negative here would be that you are wearing a butt pillow and may have some jokes thrown your way.
2 - There are many seat cushions available to use while driving. Some even have heat and massage action. Just plug them into your cigarette lighter and you are good to go. The only thing to really be careful of here is that you check your reviews.See what other people who have had sciatica say about the cushion. A great place to start would be amazon. When you find a cushion you like, go to the customer reviews and type ’sciatica’ in the search box. That should bring up the reviews of people who have or have had sciatica.
3 - Keep peanuts and water with you when you are in the car - peanuts are a great source of magnesium, (a sciatica butt kicker), and water will keep your circulation flowing. Some people don’t know this, but poor circulation can contribute to a sciatica flare.
Chiropractic - Is Chiropractic Safe For Kids and Adults?
Posted by admin in Prescription Pain Killers on January 30th, 2010
Small Children in Fort Collins
Oftentimes babies will go through some sort of trauma while they are being born in Fort Collins. If their necks are misaligned, a parent or guardian needs to do something about it. Babies cannot speak, they cannot tell us what is wrong. It is the adults that need to take initiative.
One thing that might be a hint is if the child is always looking in the same direction. This can really irritate the neck, and in this case there need to be some adjustments. This will lower the discomfort in the child, and it will let them move their neck in a number of different directions that they might not have been able to otherwise. In addition to that, children in Fort Collins who undergo chiropractic treatments are not sick quite as often as other children are.
Older Children
Older children might find their spines or necks in pain due to sports activity or their overall activity from day to day. These days kids are active, and that means they need Fort Collins chiropractic care more than ever. They could suffer from migraines among other conditions. These treatments will lower the frequency of the migraines and help the child to live a better life.
How to Know
It can be a bit difficult to identify whether or not a child in Fort Collins needs Chiropractic treatment. Early detection is key here, so make sure you pay attention! Bodily functions will need to be normalized, as they will be anything but normal when suffering from a condition. But what are the symptoms? What do you need to look out for? Here is a detailed list:
- Abnormal and possibly disruptive sleeping habits
- shoulders misaligned
- unable to move head or neck properly
- constant ear infection
- Headaches
- Bedwetting
- Breastfeeding issues in infants
Sometimes a child might become injured, and in that case it would be best to seek out chiropractic care. There might not be immediate signs, but eventually they could manifest themselves, and at that point the treatment will need to begin.
How Safe is This?
When working with childrenin Fort Collins, the approach used is much gentler than used with adults. In spite of this, children can still receive the full treatment that any adult would, and it will be entirely painless.
The same routine will be used in the beginning where the Colorado chiropractors would ask the child some basic questions, though most of the time these questions would be directed toward their parents. A profile will be built and a decision will be made as to how to proceed. The procedures will continue until the child is fully recovered. As you can see, it is perfectly safe.
Baby's Giving Mom a Pain in the Back
Posted by admin in Prescription Pain Killers on January 30th, 2010
t is normal for expecting moms to experience back pain. When you are pregnant, you gain lots of weight fast, your way of walking changes, and your hormones relax the ligaments and joints in your body.
However normal, it is not exciting to think about bearing back pain in addition to the dreaded morning sickness, constipation, rashes, hormonal changes, and even lifestyle changes that accompany pregnancy. Back pain in pregnant women can last up to three months after the delivery, and it is located mainly on hip joints, lower back, mid-back, neck, shoulders, and jaw joint.
You don’t have to endure the pain as one of the ’sacrifices’ of pregnancy. It is not hard at all to treat and even prevent back pain when you are pregnant; it just takes some self-care treatments and complementary therapies.
The human body has a powerful balance system that adapts in order to keep us straight under many different conditions. This system has two parts:
- The sensory part, which asks, “Where am I?”
- The motor part, which asks, “What am I going to do?”
Nevertheless, any adaptation has its inconveniences. When a woman’s weight increases around 25 pounds, her center of gravity and mass move forward. Right then, the balance system starts working to realign, slowly but steadily, the pelvis and spine to counter balance the extra weight. With time, the center of gravity will move back.
The spinal changes that occur are very foreseeable. The pelvis leans forward, the mid-back glides backwards, and the head and neck move in front of the shoulders. The spine has a natural ‘S’ shape curve caused by the joining of muscles and ligaments. If this curve changes, several muscles will stretch and others will shorten, causing the spine to be unstable, which in turn causes chronic tension in some muscle groups and extra strain on joints. If a muscle maintains a stretched position for far too long, eventually its fibers will elongate and weaken, the same as if a muscle is over-relaxed for extended periods of time, which shortens its fibers.
Another element of the pregnancy back pain equation is shear forces. A person with normal posture experiences downward gravitational and directional shear forces that work with the body to secure the joints into position under load, giving strength and stability to the spine. Pregnant women experience the same gravitational forces but the shear forces change direction to open the lower back joints, giving less stability to the spine. The body feels this, and the lower back muscles tighten to offer support.
During pregnancy, it is very clear which muscles weaken due to stretch and which due to shortening, making it easy for a professional to design an exercise program to strengthen those muscles. Also, appropriate back supports can help alleviate the pain while sitting down.
This is an unavoidable but manageable situation for pregnant women; it just requires the right effort to improve posture given the extra weight that will be endured, and the right preventive measures.

Cure Back Pain in 2010 - Your Resolution to Lasting Pain Relief
Posted by admin in Prescription Pain Killers on January 29th, 2010
Millions of people suffer from either intermittent or chronic back pain on a daily basis. With various types of back problems, corresponding treatment options will likely vary as well. In addition, therapy and medication may be only scratching the superficial surface where a solution is concerned. For many medical professionals, discovering how to cure back pain is something of an unsolved mystery. For the chronic back ache sufferer, this results in pacifying and dealing with the pain rather than resolving it.
So, what are some of the treatment options for back ache sufferers? Firstly, if your condition is severe, then surgery is probably your only option - which is risky at best and offers no guarantees. Medication for relieving the pain, inflammation and muscle spasms, such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen can be purchased over-the-counter, but will often be prescribed by a doctor. Cold and/or hot packs placed directly on the back may also provide temporary relief. Relaxation, massage and rest may also be recommended. These are just a few of the treatment options prescribed by medical professionals.
There is a growing consensus among back ache sufferers that medical professionals such as doctors and therapists are lacking when it comes to a viable way to cure back pain. The implication is that while doctors specialize in their particular field, they focus too much attention on symptoms and medication rather than the cause and cure. They are not far off in their pronouncements. If you want to be healed, it makes perfect sense to seek a professional who specializes in misaligned spinal columns, bones and specific muscles… to be sure.
Here’s some key facts - Back surgery is risky and offers no guarantees. It is also the only surgery to have a syndrome named after it - Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS). Pain medication is not designed to eliminate the cause of back ache - its only function is to reduce the pain. Similarly, while anti-inflammatories and muscle relaxants do provide temporary relief, they do not address the cause. Moreover, the side-effects of these medications could have major long-term ramifications. And lastly, while physical therapy may provide cookie-cutter exercises that might be helpful to someone else, it could be harmful to you.
Lower Back Pain, Right Side - 5 Tips For Pain Relief
Posted by admin in Prescription Pain Killers on January 29th, 2010
Lower back pain on right side, does not affect everyone, but at some point in our lives, almost 90% of us will seek attention for pain associated with our backs. And, lower back pain on right side, is among the most common of complaints.
Why lower back pain on right side, and not the left side?
Researchers are not entirely certain why there are more cases of lower back pain on right side, than on the left side, but some suspect that since most of us are right-handed, we tend to exert that side more often, making it more prone to injury. Keep in mind a sharp or stinging pain near the small of the back on either side can indicate a serious kidney problem. It is always best to seek the advice of a back, or lumbar pain, specialist when you are not completely sure what is causing your lower back pain on right side.
Your degree of lower back pain on right side, may not be like hers.
Did you know that two people can both suffer from a herniated disc; one with excruciating pain and the other with no pain at all? Such disparity is even more common among those who suffer from lumbar muscle strains. Researchers in a study in the New England Journal of Medicine determined that people can suffer the same back conditions while experiencing wildly different pain levels.
So why are you suffering and not the other guy?
In most cases, you can blame your lower back pain on right side, on a muscle imbalance along your spine. Years of miss-use and poor posture have allowed our muscles to develop in ways for which they were not designed. Most likely your ancestors were hunters, gatherers, farmers or factory workers. They did not get out of bed, sit in a car to drive to the office, then sit in a chair hunched in front of a computer all day, sit in a car to drive home, sit at the table to eat dinner and sit on the couch to watch TV. See a pattern?
Even when we stand, our posture is usually poor. Once in a while we may try to get in shape, but will work out the wrong muscles, having no idea that we created a muscle imbalance from the lack of proper movement. For those who work out often, chances are they may be working on the wrong muscles to put their backs and spines back in balance. It is likely that the muscles in that side of your back have developed inadequately.
So what can be done to relieve your lower back pain on right side?
- Look for a muscle balance specialist who can pinpoint which muscles you need to work on in order to build up weak areas. There are some pretty good ones out there so do your homework and you should be fine.
- Immediate relief can be found with medication, but check with your doctor first. He will probably recommend Tylenol first, then an anti-inflammatory such as Advil, Motrin, Aleve or even aspirin.
- You can lie in bed, but only for a couple days. More than that and your muscles will begin to atrophy and will create more lower back pain on right side. If you do take some rest, make sure you get up and move around every hour or so, even if it hurts. Movement will help you recover sooner.
- Ice may be good for a day or two, but only if there is swelling. After the swelling goes down, switch to heat as it will help to increase blood flow to the painful area.
- Yes, movement is important, but if your lower back pain on right side, is really bad, take a rest every now and then by lying on your back with your feet or knees propped up. Some people like to put their legs on a chair with their back flat on the floor. If you use a laptop, you can still get some work done this way as you rest your back. Do not stay on the floor too long. Be sure to get up and move around. Did we mention that movement is our friend?
Please remember that if you are in doubt as to the cause of your lower back pain on right side, see a specialist so they can rule out any serious problems.

People experiment with alternative treatments to stay healthy. They would spend a lot on expensive treatments and machines to be healthy. People who suffer primarily from back pains, neck pains, and headache can seek a certified chiropractic practitioner. People who have suffered injuries from accidents can do so as well. Chiropractic treatment is growing practice among pregnant women who are concerned of their wellness. The practitioners also teach mothers-to-be exercises that are safe during the whole pregnancy. The treatment and exercises will not only maintain a healthier pregnancy but also help reduce labor and delivery time.
Arthritis and damages the discs in the spine are common to people who are entering their 40s are likely patients who visit a chiropractic’s clinic. The procedure works on the theory that the body has a natural ability to heal itself.
Cancer patients are likewise encouraged to take a chiropractic treatment by some doctors. Patients with bone cancer and diseases of the spinal cord and bone marrow are not recommended to try the treatment as the treatment may worsen their condition. Constant consultation from the patient’s specialist should be done once a cancer patient is still needed.
