When searching the Internet for exercises to help sciatica, it is important that you take the necessary precautions before diving in. Not all exercises will relieve the pain, and understanding which exercises will help and which ones will hinder is a huge factor when treating your sciatica. Here are some exercises that will help your pain and also ones that could make it worse.

One exercise that will help in reliving any pain that you are having now is very basic. This stretch focuses on finding the actual cause of you pain. This one is very simple to due and it only takes a few minutes of your time. Start by lying on your stomach, preferably on a flat surface such as the floor. Next, prop your body up with your elbows. This will cause an arch in your back and will help the pain leave the leg. This stretch is squeezing the disk away from the nerves and over time the disc will stay more stable. Try to do this stretch when you are feeling the most pain during the day and try to do it as much as you can. The more you take the time stretching your disk away from the nerve, the faster it will heal.

The next stretch is a stretch that can cause serious injury if not done correctly. Unfortunately, this is one of the most common stretches that people will first start doing when they feel any pain but it can make things worse. This stretch starts out by you bending over at the waist and touching your toes with your hands. This will stretch your hamstrings but can accidently stretch the sciatic nerve and it roots. This can cause serious injury if done for long periods of time, and doctors recommend staying away from this stretch all together.

As you can see, there exercises that will help in reliving sciatica, and there are ones that will make it worse. It is important that you find exactly what is causing your condition by going though a self-assessment or program. Once completed, you will find specific exercises that will help in treating the pain faster and more effectively.
