Know More of What's Causing Backaches - Discussion of the Parts of the Musculoskeletal System
Posted by admin in Prescription Pain Killers on July 13th, 2009
Back pain can be simply defined as soreness felt by an individual on his or her back, usually the lower back. However, it is not as simple as its definition when we’re talking about the causes this medical problem.
A third of the population suffers from backache. However, causes of this pain vary-from the usual muscle spasm to the more serious, or even fatal, spinal damage. To discuss the differences of these variations, it is important to learn about the musculoskeletal system - the general term used for the system that is made up of the skeletal and muscular systems.
The musculoskeletal system, like what’s already mentioned, is comprised of the two most important sets of organs that control body movement and posture, that is, the muscles and the bones. The musculoskeletal system is located on almost every part of the body. Most of it is located on your back, arms and thighs. Aside from the muscles and bones, other components of the musculoskeletal system include the joints, ligaments, bursa and tendons.
Joints are the place of union of two bones. Some joints, like the one present on your knees, allow movement while others do not. Examples of immovable joints are those present on your skull. Contrary to the common belief, skull is not a big piece of bone but a set of different bones connected by immovable joints.
Ligaments are always present on movable joints. These are the tissues that prevent friction when the bones are in motion.
Tendons, on the other hand, are the tissues that connect the muscles and the bones, while bursae are fluid sacs that are present between these muscle and bone connections. Bursae, like ligaments, also prevent friction.
Sometimes, the musculoskeletal system is also called the “locomotor system”. The locomotor system is a set of organs that control body movements. However, if we define musculoskeletal system this way, we must incorporate another organ system that has the full control of our movements - the central nervous system. The central nervous system is basically composed of the brain and the nerves situated on the spine. These nerves send messages from the brain to different body parts.
Now that we fully understand the parts of our musculoskeletal system, we can pinpoint the variation of back pain that needs immediate medical attention - and it’s not the soreness caused by muscle spasms.
Even if the back muscles are situated near the spine, not all back pain is caused by muscle aches. Like the usual aches you feel on your hips and arms, back pain caused by muscles usually heals faster than the other types of backaches.
Damage to joints, ligaments and tendons is more serious compared to back pains caused by muscle spasms. Usually, tissues take a lot more time to heal compared to muscles. Surgery is sometimes necessary for proper recovery.
Probably the worst type of back pain is the one caused by spinal damage. Though fractures are curable, spine damages can also be fatal. Since the spine protects the nerves, severe damage to it can mean total paralysis, or even death. Severe spine damage is usually associated with uncontrollable bowel and bladder functions, as well as weakness of the legs. If you’re experiencing this, immediate medical attention is necessary.
Majority of back pain complaints are mild causes of muscle spasms. However, accidents usually cause serious medical problems. What’s always important is to assess your physical condition and if you think that the pain is not something attributable to muscle strains or spasms, it is time to consult a physician.
