Avoiding Scalpels - An Alternative Solution to Spine Injury Without Surgery
Posted by admin in Prescription Pain Killers on July 05th, 2009
Back pain is one of the most common complaints of adults. Apparently, more than 30% of the population is affected by this medical problem. Most of the time, back pain complaints are frequently caused by muscle spasms; however, some serious cases usually deal with spine damage. Injured spines in general should be treated by surgery; however, several alternative solutions to avoid surgery are also available for minor spine injuries.
The World Health Organization (WHO) approves a list of complementary and alternative medicine for treating back pain. Not only do these alternative solutions prevent surgery, they usually cost more reasonably as well. Chiropractic treatment is one of these complementary and alternative medicines that are known to be effective in curing minor spine damages.
However, chiropractors, or those people who practice chiropractic medicine, are usually criticized by mainstream health professionals. Some believe that chiropractic care does not offer a permanent solution but just a temporary relief from back pain. On the other and, some patients who underwent the series of treatments offered by chiropractors said that they were cured.
Before finding a chiropractor to consult regarding your spine injury, it is first necessary to learn the nature of the treatments and therapy offered by chiropractors. Though several studies were conducted to prove the efficacy of this alternative medicine, researchers came up with different, sometimes conflicting, results. Up to now, some professionals still question the effectiveness of chiropractic treatment.
Contrary to the belief of those people who call chiropractic care as an ‘unscientific cult’, chiropractors are very much different to what we know as ‘witch doctors’. As what we have clarified, chiropractic treatment is a World Health Organization-approved alternative treatment for back pain and spine. In addition, chiropractors also go through years of education, and usually, need to pass a qualifying state examination before becoming a licensed practitioner.
It is safe to undergo chiropractic treatment. Probably that answered your first question. Like other treatments, several complications may arise, but this is due to the lapses made by the chiropractor - like lack of knowledge of the nature of the spine damage. As you may know, treatment or manipulation of some spine damages may aggravate the problem, instead of alleviating it.
So what exactly are the treatments you may undergo if you decide to consult a chiropractor for your back pain or spinal injury?
The initial treatment or therapy used in chiropractic care is spinal manipulation. Spinal manipulation, or spinal adjustment, uses a dynamic thrust to adjust the joints in the spine. This sudden force is usually conducted to align dislocated parts of the spine. Generally, spinal manipulation uses the hands to massage, adjust, mobilize, stimulate or manipulate the spine. This manipulation is usually effective, especially in relieving backaches.
Aside from spine manipulation, chiropractors also use other procedures to treat spine and back injuries. These procedures may include different sets of exercises, acupuncture, dietary recommendations, lifestyle counseling, ice pack therapy and many others.
These procedures are said to be effective and safe. However, like what we had already mentioned, some professionals do not believe that these may actually cure the problem. Most probably, these procedures will only alleviate the pain.
Your judgment will always be the most important factor when choosing between chiropractors and traditional health care professionals. The best advice, nevertheless, is to consult your back pain problem to a physician and ask if a chiropractor can help you ease the pain.
